Thought I'd make an update for the very useful old threads in this forum. This is the "one-stop shopping" thread for all of these free utilities:

Anti-Virus:
AVG Anti-Virus Free (http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition)

Firewall:
ZoneAlarm Free (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/zonealarm_free_firewall.jsp)

Spyware Detection and Removal:
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoft.de/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php)
Microsoft Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en)
Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html)

Useful Free Utilities:
HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php) - Displays temperatures, voltages, fan speeds.
CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) - Displays info on CPU, chipset, motherboard, memory, etc.
GPU-Z (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/[/url) - Displays info on GPU and video card.
Memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/download.html) - Memory diagnostic.

If I missed any good ones, let me know and I will modify my post. :)

Enjoy!

A few Software things I recommend
Mail Clients
Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/) is a stripped version of outlook if you don’t use or have outlook on your PC

Web Browsers
Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) instead of IE. Its free.
Google Chrome (http://www.google.com/chrome) instead of IE. Free also

Antivirus
AVG (http://free.avg.com/) is free, and so is AVAST (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)

Pictures and Image Creation
Picasa3 (http://picasa.google.com/)by Google is the best and fastest IMO.
Paint.net (http://www.paint.net/) is great for simple modifications with type, effects, etc.

Media Players
I love Winamp because of customizations, but VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html) will play just about everything out there.

Malware, Adware, etc
A-squared (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/) . This recommendation cost like 40 bucks but I absolutely love it. I got a free version for being an early customer but it alerts you about everything scary. I might be able get deal through referral if you are interested?

Was asked to work on a Dell system, running Windows XP. System had a number of spyware and viruses running rampant. System would not even get to the Desktop. Did discover the Login/Logout Loop issue and resovled that. Not able to put onto direct Internet connection so transferred over many tools to start cleaning. Was able to load AVG 8.5 and Ad-Aware and manual updates, but unable to even load Spybot, Avast, and many other utilities.

After a week of cleaning, am taking chance to get on line. However, even though system will get on line and can browse web pages, it is unable to find and connect to MSs update site, AVG and Ad-Aware will also not connect to their update links.

Would like any suggestions short of completely restoring system. Im sure Ive missed something.

I use only freeware apps to protect my pc. Over the years I reckon I have nearly tried them all.
The one thing I gladly have paid for is backup software, it has proven to be invaluable. No matter what software I throw at my pc, harmful and otherwise I have successfully been able to restore my pc back to perfect working condition with it.
